While visiting Malta for the ISRA races this year (2006) my good friend Charles Pace suggested I pay a visit to Smokey Wheels, a great venue on the island dedicated to Slot Drag Racing and Scalex. The venue is open 3 times a week and features facilities for Scalextric type racing on their 2 great 4 lane tracks and of course the super flat, Formica surfaced drag strip. The club is owed and operated by Charles Caruana, a great craftsman and joiner in his own right. The venue was excavated under his workshop and home in Ghaxaq.

The strais feature a handrail made from a bannana exhaust! Pillows on the left are the final stopping point for the drag cars, as the end of the braking zone finishes in an “uphill”, up the side of the stair case. This stops even the fastest cars without damage.

As well as the Drag Strip there are two really nice Scalex tracks which members race on, including a Saturday club for the kids. They do have a 4 lane wood track also, but this has been taken down at present, due to the demand for Scalex racing.

So, here is the shop, the dragstrip and a couple of great looking cars.
Racers are into hard body and lexan racing here and the standard of presentation is quite frankly beautiful!
The Formica Strip is dead flat and straight, a testament to Charles’s workmanship. The decor of the whole club is a knock out.

If you get a chance pay Smokey Wheels a visit, you won’t be dissapointed!
