The range of AB Chassis is manufactured using the very latest Laser technology to ensure a strong, quality product.

Way back, Laser was not what it is now. With the advent of improved software and hardware + the addition of Nitrogen flooding, and precision focus, laser is the way to cut chassis.

From a perspective of strength in design, a well cut laser chassis will win over EDM as there are no ingress or egress slots to access “blind cut areas” of the chassis, such as pillar blocks, guide flag plates etc. EDM machining requires these slots to allow the EDM wire to pass. No such problem with laser as it directly pierces the material. With correct programming, precision focus of the laser head, intelligent design and the use of Nitrogen during the cut process, parallel cuts down to 1mm width can be cut without overheat or burn.

All chassis start as an idea, a sketch and then detailed, dimensioned drawings. Utilising the skills of an expert Cad Designer, all chassis are then digitalised and when required, 3 dimensional projections are created to ensure the fit and assembly of the components. The Laser programmer then plots the “run” of the Laser. This is key to ensure that during the process, no part of the component will attract excessive heat which may cause weakness or distortion.
When you watch the video clip, note how the laser head will cut certain sections (holes etc.) and then move on to cut other sections and return to the original part once more to cut a profile. This ensures that any heat created is not excessive. You can also see that due to Nitrogen flooding, sparks and temperature are kept to a minimum at the point of cut.

The Bystronic Laser in the pics has a cut bed area capacity in excess of 70 sq. Ft, but to cut chassis, only a small area of the cut bed is used, with the CS80 spring steel sheet held in a jig on the front of the cut bed. Digital information is pulled from the server to the machine and the optimum gas pressure and laser power / focus checked and set by the operative.

The material is loaded onto the Laser cutting bed and the button is pushed. To enable you to view a complete chassis being cut without having to wait ½ an hour to watch the dowload, we have taken the video while the Laser is cutting one of our Monoposto Chassis, this is the smallest chassis we make and therefore the cut time is proportionally shorter than more complex models in the range.
